Changing how polyester is produced

Polyester is one of the most important materials of our modern economy. It is part of everyday life, used in clothing and textiles, food and beverage packaging, and a wide range of industrial applications. However, its current lifecycle remains largely linear, resulting in resource loss and dependence on fossil-based inputs.

At matterr, we are transforming polyester waste back into chemical raw materials and enabling a new way of polyester production. Our mission is to replace fossil-based raw materials with circular alternatives and enable a truly circular polyester industry.

We do this through our proprietary depolymerisation technology, protected by multiple patents. By restoring polyester at molecular level, we enable the transformation of complex waste streams, including blended textiles and multilayer packaging, into high-quality raw materials compatible with existing polyester production.

Scaling our technology

Following the successful operation of our pilot plant in Brunswick, Germany, we are now taking the next step toward industrial deployment.

Our current focus is the engineering of our first small-scale industrial plant in Chemiepark Knapsack (Hürth), Germany, with a planned capacity of 11,000 tonnes per year. The project is funded through the ERDF/JTF programme and supported by our strategic investor BESTSELLER.

The small-scale industrial plant bridges the gap between technology validation and commercial deployment. It will demonstrate reliable continuous operation under industrial conditions before expanding to larger capacities. Our long-term ambition is to produce virgin-quality raw materials at costs competitive with fossil-based alternatives.

Scaling technologies like ours will contribute to building new industrial value chains for circular materials in Europe.
